Where your icon shows up
Your favicon appears in browser tabs, bookmarks, phone home screens and next to your site in Google results. A blank icon or your builder’s logo there makes a new app look unfinished.
The files you need
- An icon linked from every page with
<link rel="icon">. Google’s favicon guidelines ask for a square image and recommend one larger than 48 × 48 pixels, in a format such as ICO or PNG. - A
favicon.icoat the root of your site, because some browsers and tools look there first. - An
apple-touch-iconof 180 × 180 pixels for iPhone home screens.
An SVG icon looks sharp in browsers, but add an ICO or PNG next to it for Google.
Why Google shows a different icon
Google updates favicons when it recrawls your home page. Its guidelines say that can take several days to several weeks. Requesting indexing of your home page in Search Console can speed it up.
